Evidence for Europa-like tectonic resurfacing styles on Ganymede

چکیده
[1] Very high-resolution imaging and stereo topographic data obtained during the Galileo G28 encounter with Ganymede show 1) evidence for Europa-like, crustal spreading and resurfacing to form portions of the bright terrain, and 2) bright terrain that appears smooth at Voyager resolution (and thus a strong candidate for cryovolcanism) but instead is tectonically deformed and lacks embayment relationships when viewed at high resolution. In contrast to previous views, these new data show that tectonism has been the dominant process in shaping some very smooth areas and that Ganymede appears to have experienced Europa-like crustal spreading during its previous history.

Introduction to the special section: Galileo Mission results from the icy Galilean satellites
The four largest satellites of Jupiter, Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto, have fascinated scientists since their discovery by Galileo in 1610. The four bodies, named the Galilean satellites in honor of their discoverer, represent what might be viewed as a miniature solar system, with planet-sized dimension, systematically changing densities, and as diverse a set of surface characteristics, ag...

the fact that contraction produced by melting ice I offsets expansion produced by melting high-pressure ice phases. Solid– We explore the hypothesis that passage through an eccentricsolid phase transitions cause negligible satellite expansion. Lithity-pumping resonance could lead to the resurfacing of Ganyospheric stresses caused by expansion of 2% over 10 to 10 mede. To do so, we couple R. Mal...

Introduction: The possible existence of internal oceans in some icy bodies of the outer Solar System has been suggested through the last years in a joint of observations that cover a wide range of evidences: magnetic fields in Europa and Callisto [1,2], and possibly Ganymede [3], induced by Jupiter’s plasma environment in an electricity-conducting layer near the surface of these satellites, lik...

NASA's Galileo mission to Jupiter and improved Earth-based observing capabilities have allowed major advances in our understanding of Jupiter's moons Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto over the past few years. Particularly exciting findings include the evidence for internal liquid water oceans in Callisto and Europa, detection of a strong intrinsic magnetic field within Ganymede, discovery of h...

Introduction: Grooved terrain on Ganymede generally occurs as individual lanes and polygonal crosscutting swaths of bright terrain. Internally, grooved terrain swaths consist of parallel to sub-parallel ridges and troughs at a variety of scales (Fig. 1); the ridges and troughs show generally similar morphology, size, and orientation. Grooved terrain on Ganymede has been interpreted by most auth...
